Gates Cambridge Scholarships for International Students: You can expect comprehensive financial support if awarded a Gates Cambridge Scholarship. The scholarship covers the total cost of tuition fees and also provides a maintenance allowance, which in 2023-24 is set at £20,000 for 12 months (pro-rated for courses shorter than 12 months).

For PhD scholars, the award is for up to 4 years. Additionally, the scholarship covers the cost of one economy single airfare at the beginning and end of your course, inbound visa costs, and the Immigration Health Surcharge.

In addition to these benefits, the scholarship also provides discretionary funding for academic development, family allowance, fieldwork, and other expenses related to your studies. It’s a comprehensive package designed to support scholars throughout their time at Cambridge.

You can apply for a Gates Cambridge Scholarship if you are:

  • A citizen of any country outside the United Kingdom.
  • Applying to pursue one of the following full-time residential courses of study: PhD (full-time or part-time*), MSc or MLitt (full-time), or a one-year postgraduate course (full-time) with some exceptions (see list above).

For October 2024 entry, Gates Cambridge is continuing to pilot a scheme that allows applicants to apply for funding for a part-time doctoral degree.

To be considered for the scholarship, you must complete the section to apply for access to a course, a College place, and the Gates Cambridge part of the funding section.

There are two application deadlines for the Gates Cambridge Scholarship. The first deadline is 11 October 2023 and is exclusively for US citizens who are resident in the USA. Depending on the course, the second deadline is either 5 December 2023 or 4 January 2024 and is open to all other eligible applicants.
